The Code studio
A file browser and a plain editor for the repo: for reading what your agents changed and making small fixes without leaving the board.
On this page
Open it#
Use the right rail's Browse project code, ToolsCode, the Code chip in the open thread, or say open code. It needs an open repo.
The file tree#
- Folders come first. Build output and dependencies are hidden:
.git,node_modules,build,dist,.next,venv,target,vendor,coverage,DerivedData,Podsand similar, most dotfiles (useful ones such as.gitignore,.env.exampleand.editorconfigstay), app bundles and binary files. - Right-click a folder for New file here and New folder here; any file or folder also offers Reveal in Finder and Move to Trash, which asks first. The + menu adds files and folders at the top of the repo, or in the folder you are in.
- The README opens first, or else the first file.
The editor#
- Line numbers, a Find bar and undo. Lines do not wrap.
- Highlighting for Swift, JavaScript, TypeScript, JSX, TSX, Python, Ruby, Go, Rust, Java, Kotlin, C, C++, Objective-C, C#, PHP, HTML, CSS, SCSS, JSON, YAML, TOML, XML, Markdown, Shell and SQL. Coloring stops on files over 120,000 characters.
- Files over 800 KB, and binary files, are not shown.
- The bar shows the path, the language, lines and size, plus whatever is not plain UTF-8 with LF endings: the encoding (such as Windows-1252, or UTF-8 with a byte order mark), CRLF, or both.
Saving#
- Nothing saves on its own: press Save. Unsaved edits are kept as drafts, and recovered if the app quits unexpectedly.
- Closing with unsaved changes asks Save your code changes?.
- The studio does not watch the file. If it changed on disk since you opened it, for example because an agent edited it, Save does not overwrite it: a banner offers Reload or Keep mine.
- The file's encoding, byte order mark and line endings are kept. Text the encoding cannot hold offers Convert to UTF-8.
- Saving a file whose real location is outside the repo asks first: Allow Saving There, or Keep Read-Only to lock it. The answer lasts until you quit.
Files on the board#
- Insert drops the open file, unsaved edits included, as a read-only card.
- Add folder drops a folder's files, up to 40 and without subfolders, as a small explorer.
- These cards are copies taken at that moment; they do not follow later changes. See Files on the board.
