Dictation

Dictation turns speech into text where you are typing. Unlike a voice order, it only types: nothing is sent until you press Return yourself.

Dictate#

  1. Click where the text should go

A console, a text field or the command bar.

  2. Hold Fn and speak

Hold Fn for a moment, then talk. Any other key, or Esc, cancels.

  3. Let go

The text is typed at the cursor. Read it, then press Return yourself when it is right.

Where the text lands#

  1. The focused console or text field.
  2. Otherwise, the one running console you selected.
  3. Otherwise, the command bar.

A small pill shows where the text is going. If the target console is showing a permission prompt or a question, was relaunched, or has exited, the text goes to the command bar instead.

Keys and options#

  • SettingsVoiceHold to dictate picks the key: Fn or Globe (the default), Right ⌘ or Right Option.
  • If holding Fn opens the emoji picker or switches input source, set System SettingsKeyboardPress Globe key to to Do Nothing.
  • Spoken punctuation works here: say “comma”, “period” or “question mark”.
  • One dictation lasts up to five minutes. At the limit, what you said so far is typed.
  • Dictation works in the Symvibe window, not in other apps.

Cost and privacy#

Dictation runs entirely on your Mac with the same on-device model as voice orders. It uses no credits and sends nothing anywhere. Like the rest of the app, it needs an active subscription.
